PROJECT FOR THE REPAIR OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE BRIDGE OVER AGUADULCE COVE AND THE GARRAF VIADUCT

LOCATION BARCELONA, SPAIN

The bridge over Aguadulce Cove and the Garraf viaduct are located on the Madrid–Barcelona railway line, a route that runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast and is articulated through a succession of tunnels and viaducts excavated into and integrated within the rocky massif. Both structures consist of brick masonry vaults resting on piers and abutments made of limestone ashlar masonry, directly founded on the rock.

The constant mechanical action of the waves has progressively caused scour at the foundations and deterioration of the protective collars. This process has resulted in concrete degradation and corrosion of the internal reinforcement. The severity of the deterioration, confirmed by the 2021 inspections—which identified areas with section loss and highly corroded exposed reinforcement—led to the drafting of a repair project.

The main complexity of the intervention lay in its location, marked by several critical constraints: lack of land access, limited clearance between the adjacent tunnels, and its setting within a marine environment designated as part of the Natura 2000 network. It was also a technical challenge to select materials that would ensure durability in an extremely aggressive marine environment while still being feasible to install using only light machinery and with access exclusively by rail or sea.
