In the framework of the design, funding, construction, maintenance and operation project of National Routes 2 and 7 in Paraguay, the construction of 25 structures was required. Of these, 15 were duplicates or extensions of existing structures and 10 new bridges were constructed.

Newly constructed structures are generally overpasses and bridges with spans of approximately 30m built from precast beams or underpasses with multi or single span portal frames. Existing structures, which are rehabilitated and extended or duplicated are portal frames or short length bridges with various spans between 5m and 15m.

The project took into consideration the structure’s state in case of extensions or repairs, routes functioning and new normative standards of the country. Special attention was given to containment systems needed and their anchorage, structural analysis ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulatory requirements, hydraulic performance after hydrological analysis and, eventually, extension layout: symmetric (both sides) or asymmetric (one side only).

Previous works for bridges’ characterization and structural assessment were carried out in the existing structures. These works included visual survey and non-destructive tests such as geometrical measurements, ultrasound speed measurements, GPR monitoring and protection of reinforcements against carbonation through drillings and concrete pH tests conducted with concrete extracted from phenolphthalein exposure.
