The objective of this consultancy was the development of a software tool with web access that could help the Ministry of Public Works of Chile to manage the main assets along the country’s road network.

The asset management software enables storing all information related to the assets, having an inventory database, condition inspection database, plus creates reports in an automatic way. Based in the decay reports undertaken by the surveyors, the software prioritizes the needs for maintenance interventions, and estimates intervention budgets for the rehabilitation of the concerned assets. For such purpose, the tool incorporates a cost library, based in the local prices for each of the rehabilitation measures that can be undertaken on a bridge, which combined with the quantities of each damaged as measured during the field campaigns enabled the calculation of the global repair budgets.

The software also had a smartphone application for use in android platform to help and speed up the process of data collection. This application, which have pre-defined forms and a guided questionnaire to ensure objectivity and consistency of the data collected, was used for the inspection of 1,000 bridges across Chile.

INES was responsible for the development of the asset management methodology, the web-based software tool and the manuals and reports to be provided to the client. All technical and formal work was developed by INES while its partner, STRADALE, undertook the field work and inspections. INES also provided the required training to STRADALE field teams and the MOP staff.
