The emergency works to stabilize the lateral and front slopes of the Xalamera tunnel, at the south portal (P.K. 35+500 of the C-12), are progressing according to the established schedule. The Direcció General d’Infraestructures de Mobilitat, under the Departament de Territori, Habitatge i Transició Ecològica of the Generalitat de Catalunya, awarded these works to GEOTALUD S.L., a company specialized in geotechnical stabilization.
The interventions include the removal of unstable elements and the implementation of containment systems such as rock bolts, steel cables, ring nets, and dynamic barriers, with the aim of preserving the integrity of the tunnel portal and ensuring road safety.
The Xalamera tunnel, operational since 1988 under the eastern slope of “La Roca de l’Hombro” and with a daily traffic of 3,800 vehicles, experienced a rockfall on 11/29/2023, accumulating between 10 and 12 m³ of rock on the front slope. This event prompted a geotechnical and risk evaluation carried out by INES.
