Villena train station is located in the high-speed railway line Madrid-Alicante. As it is located in a rural environment, since the inception of the project, the train station was planned as a sustainable element within the existing landscape and the high-speed railway stations system. It was indeed the first train station designed and built in accordance with the handbook “Sustainable Train Station 360º”.
In order to blend the train station with its surroundings, the railway platform batter has been used to hide high visual impact infrastructures and an underpass connecting both sides of the train station was constructed. The roof, which is the only outstanding element, covers the train station and the rail crossing. The roof is the main element of the train station, not only because of its appearance, but also because of its sustainable concept. At the front of the train station, the roofing works as a double skin, facilitating solar control indoors.
