The loading pier of the Tharsis mines located at the end of Odiel River was built in 1871 and has been unused since 1991. Given its significance for the city of Huelva and its heritage value, it was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1997. Currently, due to its state of abandonment and the lack of maintenance, it is in a defective condition with multiple damages.
That is why the Port Authority of Huelva decided to rehabilitate it and give it a new public use in line with its monumental character. To achieve this, the rehabilitation project was drafted, and the works were tendered, being awarded to the consortium AZUL – INSERSA – HELIOPOL.
Due to the difficulties and lack of definition in some of the interventions outlined in the project, the mentioned Contractor decided to hire INES to conduct a study of the piers and its rehabilitation, with the purpose of defining the best course of action.
