Centre of Maintenance at the A-6 Motorway

This project was developed by the Ministry of Public Works through Matinsa, awardee of the contract for the Maintenance and Conservation of the A-6 Motorway, in the section between Madrid and the town of Villalba, as well as the N-VI road between Villalba and Guadarrama.

The project aims to bring together the con¬servation and maintenance facilities that the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways, which belongs to the Min¬istry of Public Works, has in the north area of the Community of Madrid.

The plot access is in a service road of the A-6 Motorway, located at kilometer 20, near two connection roads to Las Rozas. The cen¬ter includes an area of approximately 2.30 hectares.

The project of the Maintenance Center at A-6 Motorway tried to provide maintenance ser-vices, traffic control and the road safety to the road network of Madrid, especially regarding to the winter road management.

The project included both the development of the plot and the construction of the re¬quired buildings where the planned tasks will be carry out.

The Maintenance Center will be built in two stages. In the first stage the salt warehouse and brine production, the store warehouse, the scrap heap and a recycling center; as well as a shed for the maintenance of the machin¬ery were built. The second stage included the construction of the control building, the ad¬ministrative offices and the changing rooms.

The accessibility and the maneuverability were important issues for the design of these facilities. Therefore, the accessibility was solved by connecting the center with the A-6 in the better way. Regarding to the internal maneuverability, a main traffic corridor was proposed, which could be able to serve all the sheds, and a secondary one that could solve all the interior corridors.

The structure of the salt warehouse consists of reinforced concrete walls 30 or 40 cm thick, which support a wooden roof. On the one hand, the salt warehouse and brine production place have a height of 7.90 m; on the other hand, the store warehouse, the scrap heap and a recycling center have a height of 4.45 m. The wall thickness of 40 cm corresponds to salt warehouse, sized in order to couple the molten salts for win¬ter maintenance. In the other facilities, the walls thickness is 30 cm.

The roof is made of laminated wooden beams and supported by a panel composed of two sheets of fir wood and a polystyrene filling. The panel spans are up to 5 m, sup¬ported by 810x190 mm beams.
